EASIEST FAUX FINISHES
"MOTTLING"
This technique is one of everyone's favorite, I cannot count how many times I have done
this!  Some refer to this as a simple look of marble.
It is so easy and has variations depending on the look you want.  Look at the difference
before you begin as the preparation of the wall is the reason.
The look here with both these photos is due to a sheen as a base coat, it allows you to
blend colors with a "swirl" look to it.  An eggshell or satin base will do the trick.
When using this technique on a "flat"
sheen based wall, you get more of the
rustic look, because the colors don't blend
as well. You cannot "move" the paint
well, so the colors stay mainly where you
put them.  A completely different look but
same way to apply to wall.
Materials needed:
* 2 complimentary colors
* 2- 2"
chip brushes (chip brushes are the most inexpensive brushes they make)
or any brush
* 2 separate containers, buckets are good for this
* cut-up old t-shirts in approx. 1-2' section
*  blue tape,  drop cloth
Apply 1st color in random areas, no
need to be neat, just random.

Apply 2nd color in same manner, you
can do 50/50 or just touches of 2nd
color- whatever you want! If you do want
touches here and there of one color I
suggest using the lighter color as a 70%
and then add touches of the 2nd color
here and there.
TIP:    If using the method with a flat
wall base, have the colors meet each
other .
With a sheen base the colors should not
meet, gives room to mix into each other.
Crumple rag in hand and start blending
colors together, twisting your hand
every time you touch the wall.

Touch and twist, pull away and repeat.
Keep twisting your hand and blending
the two colors together, repeating until
area is completely finished.

You will notice a 3rd color develops with
the blending, especially when using the
sheen base method.
This is the desired effect.
The interesting thing about this-I used this so many times I never took any other pictures! It really blends with any decor using the correct colors. Try some on sample boards first!
