" TECHNIQUE TIPS"
*   One of the main things people do when they try faux painting is they tend to put
too dark a color over their white walls.   For example, hunter green over white, it's
just not a nice look!!  Dark colors are beautiful if done correctly.  If, for example,
you want the color of hunter green, then chose a lighter green or accenting color
for your base color.  Tone on tone is the most pleasing look and a simple way to
chose colors.  Tone on tone is choosing a color then having the top shade two
shades darker than the base. Or in some cases the top one to two shades lighter.
If a shade is in the same color family then it will work as well.  For example, if you
put a gold base then add soft golden brown on top. This  can be very pleasing for a
bedroom, family room, den etc.
*  Remember, if you have a lot of extra paint
from the base coat, you can always add a tint to
that paint and have your top coat--ask an expert
to help you to achieve the desired look.
*  When I refer to rags in this book I have found
cut-up white t- shirts work best, cloth diapers
work as second best (colored t-shirts tend to
bleed color).
*  When first trying any technique it would be best if you first did a sample on a
board to see how the paint comes off/on and how much pressure to use. You can
buy foam/ poster board at your local drugstore. Don't want to go buy it, use a cut
up brown bag ,this will work fine, it just will not give you the correct color.

*  Remember, Faux means "fake or false" so you are trying to put a false texture
or pattern on the wall with a tool, whatever it might be. Fooling the eye depends on
hiding the type of tool you're using-- makes the difference between a good job and
not.    And remember you do not want the wall to look like you put a sponge on it,
but rather a uniform look of design.

*  A problem people have in applying some of the techniques is they keep their
hand in the same position (sponging, ragging etc.) over the entire wall.  This tends
to look like a potato stamp and is not the desired effect you want.
 Change your
hand position every time you touch the wall and even change the position of the
tool so you won't get a repeated pattern.

*  If you do not have time to do a complete room, tape off each wall. Just
remember, you will need to let the painted wall completely dry before you tape it
off to do the blank wall.

*  Remember, most of the time you can add to a glaze if you missed spots etc.,

but you cannot remove!

*  Always wet and wring out any application tool you use unless it is the "dry
brush" or otherwise indicated.
Look for more tips throughout the
techniques!
*  If you have a wall with sun on it the movement
of the paint will be hard or impossible. You will
have to either do that wall when the sun has
changed or have to adjust your glaze or paint.
Please read directions and tips carefully in each technique before
applying, this will give you a good idea of what is to be done along the
way and the tips are always invaluable in each application.
