EASIEST FAUX FINISHES
"TECHNIQUES'
The effects that can be created with decorative painting are nearly
endless. You can create patterns with almost any tool you come up
with, I've seen the most odd of objects produce very new and
interesting results.
Each technique is the basic method, with helpful tips for easier
application and more professional results. Some of the techniques
are subtle and produce similar results that are difficult to distinguish
in photos.
You can use these techniques alone or together, applying light colors
over dark, dark over light. Be creative, adjust to what your style is.
For you, the beginner, try some sample boards and see which look
you prefer. Don't hesitate to combine them, the more layers the
more interesting the results can be.
The important points to remember are not to be afraid of making
mistakes and have fun. It is just paint, you can always start again.!
RAGGING: This has a soft or hard, crushed velvet appearance
depending on the cloth used and how many times you go over the
area.
TEXTURED WALL: If you have highly textured walls already
and don't know what to do with them, use this method, what a
difference it can make!
TWO-TONED FREEHAND: This technique is absolutely hard to
believe when you apply how well it looks! A very easy and hard to
mess up finish that I have put in million dollar homes!
MOTTLING: This finish has been described as marbling or even
clouds. It is a simple technique yet can give a very elegant look to
any decor. I have done this in one color, two and even three.
COLORWASH: Everyone has heard of colorwashing! I give three
methods to create three different looks with the same technique. It
can be the easiest to use and very dramatic if using the brush.
FROTTAGE: Also called "smooshing", "plastic ragging"- I want
to call it one of the easiest techniques! And believe me the kids can
help with this!
Aged Plaster (frottage method): COMING SOON!
