"COLORWASH"
Colorwash made easy! This is a
technique you can have the kids help
with.
It really means to wash a color on the
wall, in whatever fashion you desire.
It's a technique which you can use
glaze but can be accomplished using
thinned down paint.
These colorwash methods can be
achieved by choosing three different
tools (check out below).
Materials needed--
* One color of paint
* Glazing liquid/or paint
* Roller tray or bucket
* 3" brush, sea sponge or rag (depending on
desired look)
* blue tape and latex gloves
Mix 4 parts glaze to 1 part paint-if using paint
mix paint w/water to consistency of cream. If
either mixture appears to be too heavy,add
more glaze or water whichever applies.
TIP: When meeting areas that you
already painted in the colorwash, you
want to add the paint to the wall with a
gap(approximately 8"), between each
application and fading out on the edges.
The next application you start 8" away
then fade/ blend back into the previous
application. This prevents dark and
lighter lines everywhere.
Brush method-
The brush method is best used on a base coat
wall of flat paint, it soaks in and looks more
authentic, use eggshell otherwise.
Dip your brush in glaze/paint and brush in
different directions, in a criss-cross manner.
Continue until wall is complete. You want
the base to come through and the texture of
the brush to show, this technique makes a
very rustic look. Remove tape.
Sponge method-
Take a seasponge, soak in water and wring out. Dip into paint, wring out some of the
paint so it is not dripping in any manner.
Apply to wall in circular motion as if you were waxing your car, making sure to cover the
entire surface. Continue until wall is complete.
Remove tape.
Rag method-
Cut rag into app. 2' square, enough to fit your hand size when crumpled up.
Soak rag into thinned paint and wring out fairly well (again so it does not drip).
Now just wipe onto wall and cover surface. Repeat starting away from previous
application so as not to get overlay of paint, this makes dark lines later.
Wipe in any fashion you want just be consistent over entire surface.
Remove tape.
As you can see in the photo to the right,
using a brush you get a highly textured and
some what rustic look.
In this photo I used the sponge method.
